The village of Steventon

Now in Oxfordshire, Steventon was part of North Berkshire until the local government reorganisation of 1974. The main railway line between Paddington and Wales runs through the middle of those parts of the village west of the B4107. The town of Didcot and Didcot Parkway station are five miles away.

Some of the half-timbered houses built by the Flemings along the raised causeway remain and are well-preserved. The causeway, which runs for about a mile from the tree-lined village green to the church, was built by Benedictine monks from the local priory to stop people getting their feet wet in bad weather. Nothing remains of the priory except Priory Cottages – now owned by the National Trust – at 1 Mill Street. South Cottage contains the Great Hall of the original priory and can be visited by appointment.

Steventon Choral Society is a welcome guest at the church and has sung there many times. The thriving village school, St Michael’s CE Primary School, is a church foundation school with four classes.

Steventon boasts three pubs (the Cherry Tree, the Fox Inn and the North Star) and two restaurants (the Lantern and Blue Ginger). Close by on Milton Hill is another pub, the Packhorse Inn. For bed and breakfast in Steventon, why not try the friendly establishment run by one of our members.

Steventon Choral Society is just one of the many community groups in the village. For more details, search Oxfordshire County Council's online database of clubs and societies or visit CommuniGate for Oxfordshire
